For my personal investigation my focus is colour; and I am going to explore how I can bring an element of colour into my photographs using mixed media. 'Mixed Media' tends to refer to a work of visual art that combines various traditionally distinct visual art media. For example, a work on canvas that combines paint, ink and collage could properly be called a mixed media work. In this case I am crossing photography with art, taking photos and adding colour using art.

Artist Inspiration.
Hayley Warnham.
My artist inspiration is Hayley Warnham; I have chosen her because I like how she has taken simple black and white photos and has added blocks of colour onto them. However these blocks of colour aren't random, she has covered a specific object to make it stand out. Her colours are also very bright and bold. She has named this photo 'Glasses'. It is a portrait photo of a man on a beach, he is looking in a different direction to the camera. The photo is taken at an angle where the camera is just looking up, its not exactly at his head height. The photo has no colour, however the photographer has coloured on top of the sunglasses. The colour is a really bold/bright yellow and it draws the viewers attention to them. This picture is just one from her 'everything is beautiful series', and they were photos passed down from her granddad from his younger days. She said she fell in love with them straight away. Her inspiration for these photos is the fact that she loves black and white photography, and she particularly likes how they are square rather than rectangular. She worked digitally so she didn't damage the original photos, and she wanted to inject a sense of life and atmosphere into them. Hayley had the idea to overlay vibrant colours and textures to highlight particular elements of the photograph.

Shoot 1.
For my first shoot I have used Hayley Warnham's idea of bright colours on a portrait/scene, however instead of putting it straight onto the photo I have cut out shapes in my photographs. I started of by taking four photos of a persons face, I tried to show different emotions on one pair, and different viewing points on the other. These are the four original photographs I took.
The next step I took was to edit my photos on photoshop. I didn't want colour in my photos, so I edited them into black and white before printing them.
I then cut out shapes from each photo, and used water colour paints to add the colour into my photographs.
