Jennifer Blakeley.
Alphabet Photography is the creative process of photographing images that resembles letters of the English alphabet, then arranging the photographs together to resemble a name or word. Inspired by the children's book "Alphabet City" Blakeley travelled across Canada taking photos of objects and scenery that resemble letters of the English alphabet and has now turned these photos into a thriving online business. Blakeley develops the photos into a sepia tone and customises the photographs to spell names and words that are special to each individual costumer- creating alphabet art.
What I like about her photos is that she takes everyday objects- thinking about the composition, shape and light- and creates a letter of the English alphabet. Each of her photos are clearly well planned and she has taken a lot of time taking them. They are very interesting, and I also think it is good how she develops her photos into the same tone. This stops any distractions of colour/things in the background taking the viewers attention away.
Critical Analysis.
What I found interesting about Blakeley's work is all the different shapes and compositions. She looks at a range of objects that could create letters, especially architectural buildings. The focus of each individual photo is the structure representing the letter, and all the photos are edited in sepia, but because of different lighting and angles they all look slightly different in tone. It is interesting for the viewer as there is a lot to look at and it is aesthetically pleasing. What I like most about this piece is that each photo is unique and taken in different locations. The sequence of photographs give a calming and relaxing mood, as nothing within in them are bold, and sepia tones soften the edges of objects.

Shoot 1.
Critique.
In this shoot I looked around my school at objects/structures that form letters. Not all of the photos were that creative and not great quality. The best image from this shoot is the first letter E. The image was the most creative and the use of aperture allowed the E to stand out more.
Shoot 2.
Critique.
I went outside around my house for this shoot. Overall I didn't get many images, that were of good enough quality. For my next shoot I am going to go out somewhere, so that I can photograph more creative photos and hopefully more letters.
Shoot 3.
Critique.
I went to Wick park for this shoot. I like this shoot as the photos were more creative and for third and fourth photo I had to think about the composition, in order for it to work. To improve I am going to continue to go out and try to complete the alphabet.
Teacher Feedback.
You have taken a good range of strong photographs that have considered the work of Jennifer Blakely and the formal elements. Evaluate each photo shoot and make references to key photographic technology. 1.2.16
Shoot 4.
Critique.
For this shoot I travelled to Bath and looked at the smaller less obvious details. I like this shoot as captures the small, unique decorations Bath has. So far this is my most interesting shoot and most creative. For my next shoot I am going to continue trying to complete the alphabet.
Shoot 5.
Critique.
I went to Bristol for this shoot, and again looked at small less obvious details as well as the obvious ones. The photos in this shoot have the best clarity and positions within the image. I feel as the over time I have started to understand the task better and become more creative, and the photo quality has improved as well.
Final Piece.
Critique.
For my final piece I created the words HOME and HAPPY. Unfortunately I was unable to complete the alphabet which limited me on the words I could create. If I was to do this project again I would spend more time going out as it had allowed me to find more words and be more creative. However I am happy with some of the words I had managed to get.
